Human- animal relation in Health Promotion. Expanding through One Welfare

One Welfare emphasizes the interdependence between human and animal welfare and the environments they share. This approach contribute to health, equity, and sustainability.

Health promotion has traditionally focused on human health and well-being. At the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), this perspective is expanded through the integration of the One Welfare concept and are included in several educational programs. Examples of subjects are :
• Animal-assisted interventions in health and social care curricula
• Promotion of One Welfare in livestock farming practices
• Community-based projects that strengthen both human and animal welfare

These educational programs are rooted in participatory processes and interdisciplinary collaboration withe the educational and health sector in municipals.

By embedding One Welfare into health promotion education it will contributes to a shift from a human-centered model to a more holistic and systemic approach and enhances students’ ability to analyze interrelated challenges, fosters ethical reflection, and prepares them for collaborative, sustainable practice. It offers a robust framework for future health promotion strategies, particularly in addressing environmental perspectives, as well as mental health and social inclusion for people of all ages.
